Help us congratulate Ashleigh Richmond, Class of 2018 on her new role as the Director of Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search at Indian Hills Community College.
Ashleigh is working on two federal Trio grants. Both grants aim to support low-income and first-generation college students in taking rigorous classes while in high school, completing high school, and enrolling in college.
“I am excited about serving this population of students because I was a low-income, first-generation college student myself. These grants provide great opportunities to students, such as cultural events and college visits, so I look forward to being involved. I’m most looking forward to the Upward Bound summer program that brings high school students to live on the Indian Hills Campus for five weeks, then culminates in a summer trip.”
Reflecting about her experience with Ottumwa Leadership Academy, Ashleigh shared, “O.L.A. taught me some fundamental leadership ideas -which I’ve tried to practice since I graduated from the program in 2018. The one that really stands out for me is to assume good intent and that many challenging situations result from stakeholders not having the information, experience, or context needed. So one role of a leader is to work to make sure everyone is operating with the necessary information for the situation.”
