Cathy Penniston, Class of 2013, is a retired court reporter and now works as an Independent Broadcast Captioner for The Captioning Group, a captioning company located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.  Cathy remotely captions live television shows throughout Canada and the United States from her home in Ottumwa.  In her work as a Captioner, Cathy recently provided live television captions for the presidential debates.  Cathy also provided live television captions for the election results, including captioning stations until 4:00 a.m. the morning after the election!

In addition to captioning television shows, Cathy writes grants for the Wapello County Historical Museum, teaches Computer Essentials classes at Indian Hills Community College, and also teaches Court Reporting Procedures classes at the Newton campus of Des Moines Area Community College.

Cathy is involved in a number of organizations and currently serves as President of Chapter G of the P.E.O. Sorority in Ottumwa, Program Chairperson of Ottumwa Women’s Club, and is a past President of Ottumwa Women’s Club and past President of the Iowa Court Reporters Association.

Cathy states, “I am a graduate of the first class of O.L.A.  I enjoyed meeting new leaders in my region and community, and enjoyed making new friends while attending O.L.A.”
